Animal Allegories

Following the dogs  1996
Acrylic on linen, painted wood frame  34 x 46”

This painting is about yearning for success.  It was done as one of a series of paintings on “sport animals.”
The greyhound has not only won the race, he has even captured the pace rabbit, only to discover that it is stuffed.  It is not a real rabbit at all, just a hollow victory.  The rabbit sits at his feet, and a laurel branch (a traditional symbol of victory) hovers above his head.  Yet he still looks off into the distance, wanting something substantial, something more.
The rabbits circling the frame represent an eternal cycle of victory and yearning.
