Sacred owl 1994
Acrylic on linen 39 x 31”
This painting is an appreciation of rapaciousness in nature,
inspired by James Dickey’s poem, “The Heaven of Animals.” (below)
The owl shown here is doing exactly what it should be doing, what it
must be doing in order to survive: it is killing. The four dead mice
on the lower branch are echoed by the four living leaves on the branch
above. Each is just as natural in its place as the other. The
owl, with a halo over its head, and the dead mice, are playing out their
sacred parts in a beautiful cycle of life and death and rebirth.
The Heaven of Animals
Here they are. The soft eyes open.
If they have lived in a wood
It is a wood.
If they have lived on plains
It is grass rolling
Under their feet forever.
