Wedding kea 1995
Acrylic on canvas 26x22”
Keas are mountain parrots of New Zealand. They are attracted
to shiny objects and have reputations for mischief.
Here,
against a background of two main peaks, the kea holds a wedding ring,
ready to fly off to who knows where.
On the ground at his
feet are two plants, both thorny, one growing apart, and one growing
together to create a beautiful flower. These represent the
different paths a marriage can take.
In the sky above the kea is a long white cloud. The aboriginal New
Zealander's the Maori, called their land "Aoteroa," the land of the
long white cloud.
