Elephants, the world's largest land mammal, are also one of the world's most heavily symbolic animals. In this painting, two of its symbolic lives are represented. In Christianity, an elephant stepping on a snake is a symbol of the victory of good over evil, in Buddhism, the Buddha's mother Maya, is often represented by an elephant (usually white).
